Hypocrisy 101

In order to be a member of the Conservative Party does one have to take a class in hypocrisy? If you can successfully combine upper or upper middle class birth with lecturing to the poor, single mothers and unemployed, you’re in. So it would seem from a casual glance at the news headlines this evening.

“Tory anger at Brown’s visit” leads the BBC website.[1] Upon reading the story and appreciating that Cameron et al are denouncing Gordon for visiting the troops in Iraq, I must confess my first reaction to have been, “Are you f******g kidding me?!” Apparently when a Labour Prime Minister and thus leader of the country, including the armed forces, visits the troops which his government sent there, it’s cynical electioneering.

I didn’t see anyone calling David Cameron and William Hague on their little foray to visit the troops in Basra before the withdrawal.[2] Clearly when a Conservative visits the troops, it’s high minded concern.
