Ken Livingstone and the Jews

Geoffrey AldermanIt’s nice to know that, on  Comment is Free, having no partisan allegiance doesn’t stop one writing articles as though one were the most reactionary of Tories. I cannot help but think this recent article by ‘historian’ Geoffrey Alderman demonstrates exactly the extent to which he could be a closet Tory.

(Edit: According to Mr Alderman himself, in his comment below, he is not a Conservative, capital ‘c.’ I think his article shows that at the least he is a conservative, lowercase ‘c.’ I have, with this in mind, re-written the original introductory paragraph of this article).

Alderman denounces Ken as being anti-Jewish, meanwhile adducing examples which largely demonstrate Ken as attacking the state of Israel. Isn’t it wonderful how those two things are easily conflated?

All this comes barely a month after David Cameron attacked Ken as being anti-Jewish, as reported on Conservative Home.

Don’t get me wrong, Ken has some bizarre opinions and seems as changeable as the wind. I disagree with a lot of what Ken has said, for example, about Irish republicanism – something not restricted to Ken.

No doubt, as with Ken’s flirtation with the odd mad mullah, this was related to the power of certain ethnic communities within London – the Irish and the Muslims to name but two. Seriously, Ken should actually develop a principle or two.

None of this excuses the unforgivable attacks of this chap Alderman, with his rather blunt digs against Livingstone, not to mention his rather crude self-publicising references to his book on Jews in London politics.

In defence of Ken, he’s not Boris Johnson. If Jews were to have any corporate sense of how to vote, I doubt one of history’s most oppressed peoples are going to vote for the old Etonian kick-the-poor shitbag.

Ken even manages to hold Hanukkah festivals at city hall, ever since 2005.

Granted, most people take CiF articles with the proverbial pinch of salt, even still, for bile-filled vituperation, this article must take the biscuit.

    David

Can you please amend your blog to make it clear that I am not and have never been a Tory?

By the way, the references to my own book in my Guardian Comment are there for a practical purpose, namely to assist people who want to go to the original sources of my analysis?

    OK?

    Geoffrey,

    So edited.

As for the reference to the book, er, no it isn’t really okay. For this reason I decided to comment on it. The ‘original sources’ of your analysis are easily enough found in the media via a search engine.

David, I think you’re being a bit petty about whether or not it is OK for Prof Aldernman to link to his book, and your scare-quoting ‘historian’. Alderman’s book (like his others) is a serious, reputable, well-researched book, which describes this period very well, and is well worth reading. Although accessibly written, it has none of the polemicalness (is that a word?) of his JC and CiF writing.

Incidentally, I find Alderman’s dismissal of the ‘hard left’ in the CiF peice objectionable (“the demise of socialism as a viable political creed”, “the modernisers realised that socialism had run its course”, etc).

I also agree with you in supporting Ken. “In defence of Ken, he’s not Boris Johnson.” That sums it up quite well!

Polemicism perhaps Bob? Incidentally, welcome back.
