You're right to say that for the most part proposed Tory policy is as under NL. What is worse though is the way they are proposing to tie the aid budget to foreign policy.
The key reason to defend the miners was because un-unionised labour in other countries was yielding a higher rate of surplus extraction than our own workers here in the UK.

It was not to keep them doing something which was totally unnecessary - coal and coal mining, a living, breathing industry, continue to be necessary in a way that aircraft carriers and the defence industry aren't.

The latter carry the additional problem of actually paying to staff and maintain them, while paying to staff and maintain the mines yielded coal.

To say that providing alternative employment takes time is valid, but these companies would have to be broken up into their constituent parts anyway, so where's the harm in looking into the skills of each individual, comparing this with a list of what projects the government has under way and spending the money not on some ridiculous defence projects but on something else?

You can't really say we can't do that, because neither you nor I have the relevant lists to hand. You may retort that I can't really say we can - but the truth is, it's utterly pointless to build aircraft carriers in a way that continuing to mine coal was never pointless, so we have to find a way.

You can't just destroy the infrastructure without building up something that can replace it first. That's what you'd be doing by axing them. Coalmines spring to mind for a number of reasons - prevalent in undiversified local economies, problematic in that it's not an ideal source of energy, but we rightly opposed just shutting them down, and providing alternative employment, retraining etc takes time.

So we'll employ a few thousand people to build pointless capital projects that will cost more to run and recoup nothing simply because we can't think of anything else to employ them to do? Seems a bit shortsighted.

Don't agree with you on cutting the aircraft carriers - a lot of the money has been sunk into sub-contracts already and the impact on the shipbuilding industry and the communities that are building them would be devastating.
