Give Your Vote silliness revealed
For those anoraks who perhaps missed the “Give Your Vote” idea, it was a chance for Brits to pledge to use their vote on behalf of people in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ghana, who are affected by British policy without ever getting a say in electing our representatives.. Evidently 20.6% of those voting didn’t understand the question.
The true silliness of this idea is now revealed, as it requires a certain percentage of those who did pledge their vote to go out and vote for the Conservatives, a party which has MPs and candidates that believe a foetus punched its way out of a uterus, and those who believe demons cause homosexuality. Next they’ll be telling us gayness can be cured. Oh wait…
Anyone who goes to vote for such knob-ends after a straw poll of the self-selecting in three countries (none of which are especially known for their tolerance of gays, or women, and some of which are outright dangerous for political dissidents) is an idiot. It doesn’t demonstrate a solidarity for the disfranchised millions around the world. It is, in fact, asking for those millions to be given another kick in the teeth by a right-wing British government.
Giving your vote is a bloody stupid idea, don’t do it. Vote TUSC, vote Labour, vote Green. Do not vote Tory.
As an addendum, I would dearly love to see a sociological break down of those involved, to yield such a high proportion of votes for the Liberal Democrats. Not that I’m saying anything about sandal-wearing, muesli eating Guardianista types, you understand. Some of my best friends wear sandals, eat muesli and read the Guardian. Fact.
“none of which are especially known for their tolerance of gays, or women”
This would be Bangladesh here, a country that has had a female prime minister for much of its history, and whose parliament reserves 100 seats for female MPs?
You patronising racist git. There is more to life outside your all-white socialist parties. Fuck off.
It would be Bangladesh where homosexuality is still illegal. But on a side note, since when has the election of a female leader meant gender equality? Plenty of conservative, reactionary women in the world.
