The Fifth Tradition
I thought the best way I could mark Labour’s move into opposition is to collect together into one essay all the pieces I wrote a while ago about how the party might renew itself as it moved towards what seemed like inevitable defeat. For a while just recently, it didn’t seem so inevitable, but here we are.
So here it is all tidied up into The Fifth Tradition, How Labour can renew itself for the 2010s’, all 20,000 words of it. Does any of it still make sense?

It made for interesting reading, but I was left confused as to the narrative within which the fifth tradition would sit – the vision linking theory and practice.
I read through it and noticed that there was nothing in it on socialist political objectives. The whole emphasis at the end was on forms of canvassing and internal party politics.

Thanks for having a look. I think both of you come with a similar view, and that reflects the fact that this little writing ‘project’ of mine is far from complete. At the moment it’s just a few linked blogpost but the bits and pieces needs to be set within a wider ‘mission’. I only really put it forward now for precisely the kind of comment you’ve offered. I’m new to this extended writing lark, but I am interested in the idea of developing it into a pamphlet/short book of some kind, and am making tentative steps on that.
I’ll try to offer up a further enhanced draft taking on board your points over the next month or so. No time like the presentish.
