Cannabis Capers

The House of Lords, in its wisdom, has decided to upgrade Cannabis from a class C to a class B drug. Some of the reasons given include the harmful side effects of cannabis, particularly the mental health risks. Now if you smoke cannabis and are caught with it in your possession, you not only risk mental health deficiencies, you also get to go to jail for up to five years. Yes! That’s right. So worried where the House of Lords about people getting sick from cannabis that they decided to increase the maximum jail sentence those people might face.

Superb logic.

When even the Americans are more liberal on this than the UK, isn’t it time to think again?

Well, just don’t stand there — become an cannabis activist. Things won’t change until people stand up for their beliefs. Thank you for writing this blog, but give people suggestions about what they can do to change things. You can write to your representatives in parliament. Write letters to the editors of newspapers. Donate to or join groups formed around legalizing cannabis. Educate yourselves, and educate others. This nonsense has gone on far too long, and it is time to take action to change it.

Well, for a start, the issue isn’t hugely important to me. It’s intrinsically linked in many ways to socio-economic inequalities which I and others like me spend our time trying to fight. There’s only so much one person can do.

I support your right to put carcinogens and whatever you want into your body – but the truth is, I don’t think there will be a resolution to the drugs issue whilst we’re dependent upon the government to be a little liberal.

Even in Massachusetts, I suspect that in a few years the state legislature will overturn the decriminalization law.
